Event Details

In this 15-hour course, you will read a practical, teacher-tested resource book that is packed with ideas and examples for planning, organizing, and teaching nonfiction reading and writing. Each week, participants will meet to share their insights and questions with colleagues. Together, everyone will discover better ways to address state standards and boost student achievement.

You will be reading Nonfiction Mentor Texts: Teaching Informational Writing Through Children's Literature, by Lynne Dorfman and Rose Cappelli. (This is the companion book to Mentor Texts, a very popular title that was used in last year's study groups.)

This book shows how teachers can use nonfiction children’s literature to guide and inspire student writers, identifying a wide range of "mentor texts" and showing how these models illustrate the key features of good writing. The authors guide teachers through a variety of projects, samples, and classroom anecdotes that demonstrate how teachers can help students become more effective writers of nonfiction.
